'The Taiwan earthquake has affected several submarine cable systems in Asia, causing cable cuts near Taiwan late last night,'' Singapore Telecom spokesman Chia Boon Chong said by telephone today. ``Some customers might experience a slowdown in data or Internet access. Traffic diversion and restoration works are currently in progress.''
[Those orange dots show where the earthquake stuck. The lines show the cables]
What do you think of Singtel's Service Response Level? Has it responded satisfactorily?

Why must this 3 most used ISP choose the most vunerable country like Taiwan??? THe country "reputable" for earthquakes??? They should choose countries like HK, Malaysia OR ven our homeland Singapore!!! So much for globlisation like what seralim said.

Singtel, Shame on you
Hi All:
Sorry, but there is no excuse for this. Singapore Telecoms, shame on you.
This contingency hasn't been anticipated when everyone knows Taiwan has several earth quakes per year?
I surely hope that IDA steps in with HEFTY fines for this serious lack of planning and execution. Also, it would seem that Singtel cannot be trusted with the bulk of the overseas connectivity market and this will need to be rectified at the IDA level with at least a few more operators.
Pathetic indeed.
Our office manager is down to making long distance calls to Los Angeles using Ipass over dialup so that we can at least do order entry(email is completely down)....and yes Singtel, it is expected that you will CREDIT the cost of those calls given your inability to operate your Internet business properly. Do expect many demands for refunds, especially at the corporate level. One ping response for every 10 is NOT reliability. My goodness.
Seems interesting that the highly profitable phone call business to North America, Australia and NZ is working fine where-as the not so profitable Internet business is virtually down.

The whole point of the design of the internet and the TCP/IP protocol is to maintain connectivity in events like this.
Our ISPs should take a good hard look at themselves. This situation is about as serious as it gets. Does not instill much confidence, does it? Geez, it all feels so '3rd-world'ish.

I am having Blogging withdrawal!! HELP!
SINGTEL IN DENIAL
Just by reading the media on Singtel's response to this crisis, it almost seemed like we are hardly affected by this break-down when in actual fact, most of the businesses here are experiencing disruption especially when they are very dependent on the net. My office is virtually down to manual 'lay-man' methods in the last 2 days.
High time Singtel, the biggest Telco in S.E.A come out of their cosy shell and hold a press conference to explain whats going on, how bad we are affected and how long more before Singapore get restored to our 'Global Telecomuunication Hub' status again!
